What's Involved
CU People, Cornell's personal web page service, provides space for the personal web pages of Cornell students,
faculty, and staff. This service is provided free of charge to all members of the Cornell Community.
To see what's involved, read on...
-
Fifteen megabytes (15 MB) of space for the purpose of making available personal web pages. You should not use this space to post material on behalf of other parties. There is no provision for purchasing additional space. You can request a disk usage report at any time.
-
Your own web address (URL) in the form http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/NetID/ where the term NetID is replaced with your Network ID in all lowercase letters.
-
Access to your files via File Transfer (FTP) using your Net ID and password
(see Uploading Your Web Page for details).
-
Additional Technical Features are available:
-
Server- and client-side side Image Maps are supported.
-
Java applets, small self-contained programs included within a web page, are allowed.
-
Images,
Sounds, Videos, Portable Document Format (PDF) files, etc.
-
No telnet access to the CU People system is permitted (i.e., you cannot log in to the system with a terminal emulator).
-
For security reasons, custom Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts are not permitted (CGI scripts are often used to process web-based forms or perform other tasks based on the actions of someone viewing a web page).
-
The system will be backed up to prevent data loss in case of catastrophe, however files accidentally deleted from or overwritten on the server cannot be recovered. We strongly recommend that you keep backup copies of all personal pages on your hard disk or diskette in order to minimize potential loss of information and effort.
-
All personal files on the CU People system are publicly accessible until and unless you take steps to restrict access (see
Restricting Access To Your Webpage page for relevant details).
-
All users of CU People must adhere to our Terms of Use.
-
You may not use your allocation to provide space for other individuals (friends, family), courses, organizations (clubs, groups), etc. Follow these links for information on creating websites for
classes,
research, or
student organizations.
-
Material on your web pages may not violate federal, state or local laws or university policies or codes.
-
There is no charge for CU People, however CU People Registration
requires a
Network ID and
SideCar
