A brief history (c.2000-2001) of Andrew begins on 19 March, 1973 in Westchester
County, more or less 30 miles
northeast of New York City.
He began birding at age four and a half, and his first sighting (aside from the
Downy Woodpecker from the crib) was a Great Blue Heron at Greenhaven
Beach, Rye,
NY in December 1978. He attended Rye
Country Day
School from 1978 to 1991 and made many excellent
friends there. From 1991 to 1995 he lived in Ithaca
(making many excellent friends there too), completing (miraculously!) a BS in
Natural Resources at Cornell
University. After a brief
stint in Austin TX (1995-1996) playing music, he lived in Ithaca
for another few years. In this
fertile period he formed Mectapus, he formulated an ornithological study plan,
he contemplated "the real me", and so on and so forth. From Ithaca
he moved to the bastion of despair, Youngstown,
OH, for a year of wondering why it
took a year to wonder.
Some near-term recent history (c.1999-2002) of Andrew found him finishing a MS Zoology at Clemson
University while smitten by fabulous
Patricia A. Ryan of New York,
NY. In between dinner in Manhattan,
a dank redneck bar in Clemson, travels with Charlie, and birding adventures
supreme, he found some time to complete his thesis under
Dr. Sidney A. Gauthreaux. After
completing his thesis, Andrew sat behind a computer monitor in Manhattan
analyzing bird populations and making trouble for National Audubon
Society. A sample of that work
should have appeared here by now, but likely it never will.
Recent history (c.2002-2006)
found our hero madly working on a dissertation back at Cornell
University while commuting between Ithaca,
New York, and points nowhere in between
(recently including Arkansas,
Ecuador, and Germany). 1 August 2006 saw the culmination of
this work, with Andrew defending his dissertation, and eventually receiving his
Ph. D. in
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in January 2007 (not in the period between
2002-2006. . .). Of course, August
2006 was a month forever immortalized for incredible events in the lives of
Farnsworth and Ryan – on 26 August 2006, the two were married in a fabulous
affair at Wave Hill in the Bronx. And also in August 2006, the wheels for the
more recent historical events of a postdoc at Cornell were put in motion. Busy month!
Very recent history (c. 2007-present): Now living full time in Manhattan (finally!) with
the fabulous woman of his dreams, working officially as a Postdoctoral Research
Associate in the Conservation Science Program at the Cornell Laboratory of
Ornithology (www.birds.cornell.edu)
on projects 05-245, 06-245, and 07-245 sponsored by the Department of Defense
Legacy Resource Management Program (www.dodlegacy.org),
no verb in this sentence. . .
Some deep Mectopian history: random notes about the band Mectapus
from the great beyond - As a freshman at Cornell
University in 1991, Andrew
became acquainted with one Mr. Dan "The Man" Janis who lived in the
cell across the hall in University Hall #3, Class of 1922 dormitory. It was
Janis who introduced Farnsworth, the plastic samurai, to Mr. Peter Dougan,
former Mir cosmonaut, during an unsanctioned, impromptu and
quickly terminated (very loud) jam session in a lounge space of the dormitory.
A quick and lasting bond began there, as well as a pattern of making too much
noise in the dorms: thus, the seeds of Mectapus were planted. As a member of
Mectapus, Farnsworth, the primary constituent of dark matter, terrorizes other
members of the band with his organizational skills and members of the audience
with excessive body movement and contorted facial expressions. He chooses his
battles wisely and speaks only the when speaking. Farnsworth, cowboy for the 1990s, also holds fast in the
rushing torrent that is reality by reading subversive literature, writing
subversive literature, and traveling subversively. Formerly classified as a
leafy, green vegetable, he has taken his rightful place in the budding
Mectopian democracy as the all powerful ruler of everything that is, was and
ever shall be.
