Research Interests and Interesting Links
I started birding in early January 1978. Since that time, I've had the good fortune to travel to many fabulous places and to see countless amazing birds. My interest has always focused on migration, bird distributions and patterns of vagrancy, but my heart has always been grounded (no pun intended) in all things bird migration. The catalyst for my current research efforts is, without a doubt, Bill Evans. I met Bill in September 1991 in my first semester at Cornell University. Some time shortly after that first meeting, I spent the first of many nights atop Mt. Pleasant (just east of Ithaca) with Bill, Ned Brinkley, and Adam Byrne, listening to an amazing flight of cuckoos, thrushes, grosbeaks, warblers, sparrows, buntings, bitterns, herons, and probably a whole suite of other species. With my passion for bird migration already firmly established, there was never a doubt that this idea would catch fire and take flight (again, no pun intended. . .).
