Picture 4WG007LG - 96KB

This wing panel is about 80% complete. The primary wing structure is complete, and the aileron is being fabricated in place, to be cut away later. This insures a perfect match of aileron to wing. Note the leading edge to the right of the photograph. This curved, 1/32nd inch-thick plywood bears the brunt of the air pressure and inevitable insect collisions. And it actually is plywood - three wood fiber layers and two adhesive - and actually is 1/32nd inch thick. At this stage, before all the hardware is attached, and wing fuel tank installed, the structure 10 feet long and 4 feet wide, weighs about 15 pounds. When finished, it will weigh about 21 pounds. Imagine four panels - less than 100 pounds total - supporting a maximum gross aircraft weight of 1200 pounds while in flight. Gives one pause, doesn't it?
