Picture 4WG008LG - 84KB

Detail of wing tip showing wing tip bow. The bows were epoxy dry-laminated from five strips of 1/8"-thick flat wood stock (same material as used for the geodetic cross members in the wing body). A nail jig was used, much like that for the rib jigs, set directly into the work table surface from a full-sized blueprint. The wing tip bows have no aerodynamic purpose, but they make the wings look so much better than having squared-off ends. The straight pieces between the bow attach points are there to support the span of the bow against the considerable pressure that the fabric covering, once shrunk, puts on the structure (during the heat treatment of the fabric once in place on the wing panels, I could actually hear the wing creaking as it accepted the force of the fabric shrinking - no lie!).
