Allen Fogelsanger

Allen Fogelsanger is the Music Director for the Cornell University Dance Program. As Director of Music for Dance, Allen teaches music-related dance courses, composes and improvises music for dance performances, and accompanies (mostly modern) dance classes. He also sometimes thinks, writes, and talks about how music and dance work (sometimes together).

Before working at Cornell he served as music director for the Central Pennsylvania Dance Workshop / Pennsylvania Dance Theatre in State College, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University and his Ph.D. from Cornell University, both in mathematics, and has studied music composition with Burt Fenner, Steven Stucky, and Karel Husa, and dance composition with David Gordon. He has accompanied dance classes at the Harvard Summer Dance Center and at American College Dance Festivals.

AF is also currently serving as the Cornell Dance Program's Coordinator, and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Dance (see here and here and here).

Allen has quite a few professional interests, including composition, improvisation, perception, and (formalist, modernist, and post-modernist) aesthetics (of both music and dance), and they'll eventually all get their own (sets of) pages. For now, here's a starter page on using computers interactively with dance and another on what he's up to. Finally, he does have a few non-professional interests.

More of his work, including video and more music examples, can be found at Armadillo Dance Project. Allen is a composer of soundscapes for movement and the examples reflect his preoccupations with sound, with space, with movement, and with the relationships among them.
