Segment 1: Identify & Formulate

The objectives of this stage are two: a) to clarify your starting point and b) to enlist a few allies.

Tasks:

  • Distill your area of interest down to four or fewer key concepts.
  • Select two individuals to serve as resource people. Do not chose people who think much like you, but do chose people whose areas of expertise or experience are relevant to your key concepts. You and these two colleagues form the core group of your interdisciplinary team. (You'll add more people to the team later.)
  • Discuss your area of interest with your core group and elicit their ideas for search terms.
  • Plan your initial search strategies based on your key concepts.
To get started, check out the search strategy tutorials linked in the lefthand sidebar. If you don't feel you want a tutorial, but you would like a guidesheet, try this one from Sehome High School of Bellingham WA: Planning Your Seach Strategy for Electronic Databases.
