Teaching and Advising Philosophies:

My major goal is to provide high quality courses which are timely, relevant, and interesting. I firmly believe that learning new information can and should be enjoyable for both the students and the teacher. I don't simply repeat the material in the texts and readings, but I work to tie them to current events and real world examples where students can better understand the usefulness of the information. Guest speakers, often alumni, are also invited to share their experiences, career paths, and expertise.

As an advisor, my goal is to help each student complete the requirements of the major and the college with minimal frustration. I also try to know each student and their possible career options. This way I can better suggest elective courses, alumni contacts, and graduate programs. Every incoming student presents delightful new experiences, and I look forward to following their challenges and successes at Cornell and after graduation.

Personal Information, Hobbies, and Interests

I was born in Burlington Vermont, a community similar to Ithaca. I graduated from Ithaca High School and married my high school sweetheart Jody. We live in Freeville where we are continually working on restoring our nearly 200 year old home. We have two sons, Evan, Class of 2002, and Corey, Class of 2007. Evan is an archivist at the Cornell University Kroch Library and Corey, an accomplished musician, is active in the Cornell Glee Club. My enjoyment of Cornell comes from my family's nearly twenty Cornell degrees spanning three generations. I applied to Cornell early decision as an engineering student, but transferred and graduated with a B.S. in Business Management. I later returned to Cornell to complete graduate work in Communication. I frequently travel to Cornell Alumni Associations to give lectures on topics such as networking, leadership, and dining etiquette.

My father, Wendell, was a professor in Agricultural Economics, now Applied Economics and Management. He was active in Cornell's Entrepreneur and Personal Enterprise Program and Food Marketing Program.

As far as I know we are the only father and son to have both won Cornell's Professor of Merit award.

I love working in the Cornell and Ithaca communities and enjoy learning from students as well as teaching them.

My Family:

I lived in Arizona on the Fort Yuma Indian Reservation where my wife and I worked as youth directors with the Quechan Indians.
(An experience where we learned far more than we taught.)
I also have worked with Cornell's Native American living center, Akwe:kon.

I can be seen at Lynah Rink.

I play Tuba.

I enjoy special interest automobiles and have owned quite a few.
I currently own a 1927 Hudson and a 1953 Buick Roadmaster Convertible.

I am an Eagle Scout and former Scoutmaster.
