INFO AND RULES

****************

NYSBirds-L is an email list focused on birds and birding in New York State. It is not for the discussion of pet birds or falconry, except as far as these topics directly relate to wild birds. The primary purpose of the list is to disseminate information about bird sightings in New York State in a timely manner. Questions and limited discussions on topics such as bird behavior, identification, conservation, and distribution, especially as these subjects relate to birds in New York State, are welcomed and encouraged.

This list was created in an effort to help spread information about wild birds in New York State in a wide, timely manner, and to provide an effective electronic forum for birders in New York State.

***PLEASE NOTE***: Ultimately, the determination of what is appropriate to discuss on the list, and when a discussion should be ended, will be made by the listowner.  In addition, the listowner of NYSbirds-L has the right to remove subscribers from NYSbirds-L if the listowner deems it appropriate.  Except in extreme cases, removal from the list will not take place without giving the subscriber a warning.

LIST RULES

***********

If any subscriber feels that another subscriber is violating any of the following basic rules, do not direct comments to the entire list of other subscribers. Any comments or concerns must be directed to the listowner and co-owner. Please make note of the statement under the “Questions, Comments, or Concerns” heading.

Violation of any of the following basic list rules may result in subscription suspension or termination; however, this will not be without a warning.

ATTACHMENTS are prohibited on NYSbirds-L. This includes accidental attachments, intentionally forwarded or directly sent attachments, and virtual business cards or VCards. Attachments bog down the email list server, resulting in significant delays in message distribution. Attachments also serve as a perfect mode for spreading infectious computer viruses.

COMMERCIAL, RELIGIOUS, OR POLITICALLY CHARGED messages as well as any inappropriate or offensive material are prohibited on NYSbirds-L.

PERSONAL OR PRIVATE MESSAGES should NOT be sent to the entire list. Know your destination address before sending out an email.

REPLIES TO QUESTIONS posed on NYSbirds-L should only be posted to the list if their content is pertinent or important to all subscribers.  If a subscriber requests information from other subscribers that is not pertinent to the function of NYSbirds-L, and if it is asked of replies to go to the original requestor, do not send those replies to the entire list. The person who originally posed the question may later compile and post a single email summarizing those replies, as long as they are appropriate to the function of NYSbirds-L.

FLAMING OR OFFENSIVE MESSAGES will NOT be tolerated.  This means that offensive or inconsiderate replies or posts to the entire list of subscribers may result in immediate suspension, and possibly removal, from the list. The listowner has control over what is posted to the list and how subscribers are using the list. The listowner is not responsible for what happens outside of the list; however, the listowner may have some influence in handling off-list issues.

SIGNATURES, in the form of text at the end of an email posting, are considered proper etiquette and should be included in emails sent to the NYSbirds-L list. Please be sure to include your full name and your base location (City/Town, State) in your signature or as manually added text at the end of a posting.

PET BIRDS OR FALCONRY is not to be discussed except as far as these topics directly relate to wild birds or birding in the Finger Lakes Region.

“I AGREE, TOO!” NYSbirds-L may expose issues which subscribers may or may not agree with. Subscribers must refrain from posting on that same issue unless they have further insight or information to add to the discussion. A reply of "I agree!" should go to the sender of the message, not to the entire list.

DELETE KEYWe’re all here for the same reason: we love birds and birding. The subscribers of NYSbirds-L are a very diverse group. There will be varying levels of postings, from lengthy dry lists and long detailed trip reports to basic behavioral observations, joy expressed from a sighting, and one line sighting updates. If a particular aspect of a posting or repeated postings is bothersome to a subscriber, use the DELETE KEY first. If it continues to bother you even more, CONTACT THE LISTOWNERS FIRST. Let the listowner handle what is appropriate or inappropriate for the list.
