Nighthawk's primary and secondary education was conducted in the Averill Park Central School District, Rensselaer County, NY. After graduating as valedictorian of the class of 2002 from Averill Park High School, Nighthawk began his undergraduate education at Princeton University. Nighthawk graduated from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School in 2006 with a degree, magna cum laude, in Public Policy and International Affairs. Nighthawk also received certificates from Princeton in Environmental Studies and European Cultural Studies. Nighthawk's senior thesis, "The Cry of the Loon: A new conservation ethic based on the positive effects that exposure to nature has on environmental consciousness", was written for his concentration in environmental public policy.
After graduating from Princeton in June, 2006, Nighthawk began a year of less formalized,
but still very enlightening education in which he worked as an environmental educator with
Nature's Classroom in Lakeside, Connecticut,
travelled the United States and the world for several months, and hiked 1,100 miles on the
Appalachian Trail. In August, 2007, Nighthawk began his graduate studies at Cornell University,
where he will complete his Ph.D. around June 2012.
