An Ecologically-Based Evaluation of

Conservation and Limited Development Projects

Download

This study evaluates conservation and limited development projects (CLDPs) from the standpoints of conservation success, financial success, community acceptability, and long-term impact on the sponsoring organization. The research, conducted in 2004, is based on more than 80 interviews, 100 project records, 30 site visits, and 10 detailed case study analyses using an ecologically-based system for project evaluation.

From this page, you can download the study chapter-by-chapter or in its entirety. Chapter 1 defines different types of CLDPs, how they work, and why land trusts and landowners conduct them. Chapter 2 situates CLDPs in the context of private land conservation in the United States, reviews existing material on CLDPs, and discusses recent critiques of CLDPs. This chapter also reviews relevant literature on measuring conservation success. Chapter 3 explains the study’s methodology, including the conservation evaluation method developed by the author. Chapter 4 presents the results of the evaluation in narrative and graphical formats. Chapter 5 summarizes the study’s conclusions and provides guidelines for practitioners conducting or considering CLDPs. Appendices A-C provide additional information on the conservation evaluation method, the nationwide survey of CLDPs, and the ten case study projects, respectively.
