The Irony in the Vietnam War | Made in America: Packaging the Vietnam War | Vietnam Showdown
Here is the text of the assignment:
In his article, “The Undying Uncertainty of the Narrator in Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried,” Steven Kaplan points out that "before the United States became militarily involved in defending the sovereignty of South Vietnam, it had to, as one historian recently put it, "invent" the country and the political issues at stake there. The Vietnam War was in many ways a wild and terrible work of fiction written by some dangerous and frightening storytellers" (43). Using the research skills you learned during our trip to the library, find evidence of the "invention" Kaplan mentions. Though Kaplan describes the storytellers as "dangerous and frightening," your sources will most likely not announce themselves as such. In groups of four, find materials from the Vietnam War era that present the Vietnam War for American consumption. These materials might include, but are not limited to, photographs from popular magazines like Time, political cartoons from newspapers, songs that refer to the Vietnam war, articles or editorials about particular events, etc. These materials may be (or at least, appear to be) neutral, for, or against America's involvement in Vietnam. Choose two of your group's most interesting materials and together compose a presentation of approximately ten minutes on those materials (naturally, both the research and preparing for the presentation will require you to meet with group members outside class), to be presented during the next few class sessions. You are encouraged to use audio and visual materials.
