jason gallant

ph.D candidate

My name is Jason Gallant, and I am a third year graduate student in Carl Hopkins’ laboratory where I study mormyrid electric fish!  I hail from Connecticut, and studied Biology and Human Rights at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.  I enjoy windsurfing, scuba diving, backpacking, politics, a 80’s music filled dance party, and a good beer every now and again.

I am interested in the origin and adaptive radiation of novel structural characteristics that effect animal communication signals, especially those related to signal diversity, mate choice, and speciation.  For the past three years, I have been studying signal form and electric organ morphology in the Mormyrid electric fishes of Africa in the genus Paramormyrops, which have undergone explosive speciation in West Central Africa (Cameroon, Gabon, and Congo).

Currently, I am applying developmental and genetics-based techniques to better understand the origin and evolutionary modification of this really amazing tissue, a question that even had Darwin stumped!
