This new alternative bicycle technology is comparable to a four-wheel drive automobile, in that each of its wheels is provided with power. This is done by adding to conventional straight handlebars an assembly of hand-pedals, which permit:
propelling the front wheel, and also
braking using a coaster brake
The bike is equipped with one or two additional brakes for increased safety.
Hand pedaling represents an enjoyable new skill, which can be learned by riding the bike, at first as an ordinary bicycle, but using one of the hand-pedals for braking. As one becomes familiar with such conventional biking, it is possible to shift, as desired, to the new skill and either all-wheel (hand and foot) or front-wheel (hands only) propulsion.
Although the superbike is not yet commercially available, the technology may be installed on a new bicycle, supplied by or purchased for the customer. For more information, contact Dr. Jaroslav Vanek, jv19@cornell.edu.
