No previous
dance experience required.
Uptempo swing dance styles of the '30s, 40s and '50s and today. The
syllabus includes Jumpswing (tons of fun!), Lindy Hop, Charleston,
classic jazz moves, and East Coast Swing.
The music is big band swing, big band rhythm & blues, jump swing, piano
boogie: Count Basie, Benny Goodman Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Brian Setzer, Cherry
Poppin' Daddies, Royal Crown Revue...
Although oriented at TOTAL beginners, we offer extra material for quick learners
as well (Want even more? Ask!). We are non-judgemental instructors, encourage
questions, and do lots of review. This is a good energy course, and does not
require between-class practice time (although you would benefit by it).
No partner needed:
we rotate non-partnered dancers with each other frequently throughout each
class, "a great way to meet people!" -Fall '97 student.
If you do sign up with a partner, you are not required to rotate partners,
except in our "mixer" dances.
"Fun,
fun, fun!" -Spring '98 student: Fun exercise,
AND, becoming comfortable with socially acceptable, respectful,
forms of touch with members of the opposite sex, in the context of music and
dance, is delightful. It is a nice way to meet, and get to know people! Over
2/3 of our students take it as non-credit. AND, our student surveys show that
the vast majority of our students take the course based solely on word-of-mouth
recommendations of former students. Our approach to dance is student-friendly:
fun, entertaining, and amusing. What
do students have to say about the course? Check
it out.

For classes in the Helen Newman Dance Studio, bring clean leather sole shoes,
