Dr. Thonney grew up on an Eastern Washington dairy, livestock, and grain farm homesteaded by his great-grandfather in 1877 near Pullman.  He is a graduate of Pullman High School and Washington State University with graduate degrees in nutrition from the University of Minnesota.  He has been a professor at Cornell since 1975.

Dr. Thonney is the leader of the Cornell Sheep Program, which evaluates and disseminates information on management, nutrition, health, selection, and marketing strategies for highly productive sheep systems.

 

Dr. Thonney teaches courses in beef cattle and sheep management and conducts research in the molecular biology of muscle growth and in nutrition, health, and management of sheep.
