Ice Dragon '03

For all those folks who have asked for my research presentations from this year's Ice Dragon.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard and made this year's event such a special day.

A Knitted Flat Cap Dyed with Madder
This was an interesting experiment in the area of "from the sheep to product". I learned alot about the processes involved in textile manufacture with wool. And despite the historic evidence to the contrary, thought I should at least try the whole process once.

A Pair of Scoggers &
an Experiment in the Medieval Approach to Knitting
I am very often asked about how I made something. And truth be told, I don't use patterns. I use what I have on hand, and after just a little thinking about the process, cast on. This led me to investigate whether this approach to knitting was supported by the evidence from the Middle Ages. Using a variety of primary, translated, legal and archeological resources I was able to piece together an idea of how the Medival person would have approached this art.

The experiment in Plain Sewing - The Smock.

While other researchers might pursue the extravagant, the premier, the ultimate state of an items evolution, I prefer looking at the roots, the structure of a thing. This project was an exercise in the art of Plain Sewing, the foundation for all other needle arts.
