In my current rotation project, I am investigating anaerobic metabolism of benzene. Petroleum products like benzene frequently contaminate soil and groundwater. It is believed that microbial degradation is an important mechanism for the natural destruction of benzene. However, the mechanism of anaerobic metabolism of benzene remains unknown. My interests are broadly focused on environmental microbiology and molecular biology.
Adam Lowe Rotating ajl248 Salisbury University
As an undergraduate I worked in a several labs but my main focus was on investigating how Omega-3 fatty acids affect murine melanoma cells. We showed that at higher dosages the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid selectively induced apoptosis in the cancer cells and that at lower dosages, the cells place the fatty acids into their membranes. Incorporation of the omega-3 fatty acid increased membrane rigidity and caused a decrease in metastatic potential.
Jennifer Nelson Rotating jln52 Morningside College
My undergraduate research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln focused on the metabolism and physiology of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
