How to Upload Your Webpage:

Once you have finished composing your webpage, you only have one task left, uploading it! The following steps guide you to your final goal of putting your webpage on the server for everyone to see.

  1. First, preview your page on your home computer. To preview a page, start a web browser, then drag your webpage file (index.html) into your browser. If your browser does not support this, then choose "Open" from the "File" menu. Once opened, you will be able to browse your page from your computer as if it were online. Click all your links, sounds, scripts, etc. to make sure they work. Ask your friends what they think.

  2. Next, upload your page and all other related files (images, sounds, etc.) onto our webserver. Use File Transfer as outlined at Computing at Cornell: Transfering Files to upload your files.

  3. You will need our specific Server Information to upload your files.

  4. Once it is all set up, just upload your files, and you're done! Make sure that you name your home page "index.html".

  5. After uploading your files, DO NOT delete them off the machine you are working on. If you are uploading from your home computer, then be sure to retain a backup copy on your hard disk. If you are working from the lab, then be sure to save a copy to a disk or email yourself the files, so that you can keep a backup of your work.

  6. Test your page on the server. Type in your home page address (http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/NetID/, where NetID is your Network ID in all lowercase letters). If everything works then you are done! If not you may want to see our Modify Page.

Further web publishing instruction is available from CIT Training, and the Cornell Library Gateway offers instruction in some computing areas you may find of interest. If you have any questions or concerns see our FAQ, or send us feedback to webpages@cornell.edu.
